Digitising your content is just the first step in a long-term digital preservation exercise. Digital storage media themselves become obsolescent at an alarming rate. The key new factor is that digital media can be copied without further loss. This section addresses both technological and managerial processes involved in storage and archive management.

This document explains the ways in which audiovisual content can be held in computer files – the encoding of the content, including data reduction (compression) as the various file formats in use.
Archiving digital content can occur at different points in the broadcast chain. Generally these can be classified as either "pre-transmission" or "as-transmitted". In both cases the archiving of traditional linear content, e.g. video and audio, is reasonably well catered for, though often relying on solutions developed for analogue broadcasting. However, at present there is little technology available to archive interactive content due to the diversity and nature of the deployed technologies. This paper describes ongoing research into the archiving of as-transmitted interactive content.
This document sets out the requirements for a secure, sustainable digital repository – with special reference to digital audiovisual materials – and examines the technology and standards being developed to fulfil those requirements. It recommends “OAIS for datatape” as the needed (and missing) approach.
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for data storage. Data storage is a very particular area of IT services that has seen rapid growth over the last 5 years. The technology has grown mature enough to be able to provide a specialised service for small to large organisations that are willing to outsource such capacity to a third party. At the end of the report a number of recommendations for the process of formulation of SLA have been made.
This document present a ten-year forecast for storage technologies, including technical limitations of the current technologies Πplus suggested new research and product development possibilities.

A preservation strategy is simply a schedule of actions. The plan adds the specifics. The strategy may say "conserve another 10 years and then review", or it may say "make new master copy". The strategy may even say "make new digital master copy". But it is the plan that says exactly what the conservation method will be - and the real complication comes in saying what the exact method will be for making a new master.
A preservation strategy is about sequence and timescale. All the elements in the preservation map that need attention are put in a priority sequence - and time information is added according to how long you want the work to last, or how long the funding lasts, or how long the material itself will last.
Preservation is a strategic issue. Consider the long-term purpose of the preservation work - Collection Strategy: Long-term purpose; Access; Required changes; What preservation contributes. Preservation Strategy: Selection; Conservation; Restoration; Digitisation; Documentation
Start your preservation journey by finding out where you are: what's on the shelves. This information gives you a map of your audiovisual collection.
