The PrestoSpace approach to Digital Preservation

Broadcast archives, film museums and other holders of audiovisual material, across Europe, are working with PrestoSpace: a major EC-supported project to develop preservation factories for transfer of ‘tapes on shelves’ to new, digital collections.

Moving to digital storage and delivery involves a major change of culture, technology and business processes for archives, as the bulk of material currently on shelves – something like 100 million hours across Europe – needs conversion to digital mass storage. This need is pressing, just at a time when digital storage technology is itself rapidly changing.

The PrestoSpace project has developed technical solutions and integrated systems for digital preservation of all types of audiovisual collections. It has prepared the way for the creation of preservation factories providing affordable services to all kinds of collection custodians in order to manage and to allow access to their assets..

The project's tangible results in the domain of preservation, restoration, storage and archive management, content description, delivery and access are presented on this website.

This is a non-commercial website, where the project partners are presenting the results of their best efforts to collect and interpret information about digital preservation issues.
