A preservation project is all about resources (people, skills,
equipment) and media, and their movement and allocation: it is about logistics. The most important issue in preservation is not costs; it is quality. Quality is also a matter of logistics - about how much resource is needed to achieve a particular level of process
quality. In the traditional view, every item is transferred at the
best possible quality. In contrast the PrestoSpace project proposes a methodology with the goal of getting the best overall result. This
necessitates the movement from an item-level view to a
collection-level view.
The Preservation Calculator provides a tool for calculating the
project budget, broken down into monthly units, showing the logistical
and financial consequences of a preservation project: including costs
for media, staff, equipment, facilities, transport.
