Access is the primary source of funding and Return On Investment (ROI)
for preservation. Without the prospect of new and expanded forms of
access, there will be little real chance to raise the funds needed to
preserve existing valuable content. Intrinsic cultural value is all
very well, but it is the experience across broadcasting that such
value does not fund preservation. It is usage that funds preservation
in broadcasting, and it is this message that we wish to bring to the
audiovisual sector at large, especially the high cultural sector of
collectors and collections.
The ROI Calculator uses the information generated by the Storage Ready
Reckoner together with estimates for the costs of preservaion,
restoration and provision of access. For a small number of business
models, the ROI Calculator will calculate required investment and ROI,
year-by-year.
